DEAR DALI MAMA:
I have a dog and I love him dearly. I consider him family and he has been with me many years—since he was 8 weeks old. However, I have a problem which I won’t go into which makes it harder and harder for me to walk him enough these days. I do as much as I can but I know it’s not enough and I feel guilty.
I think he’s depressed and it makes me worried and sad to see him sad. I want to do what’s best for my dog, despite my wanting to keep him till the end. Do you think it’s cruel of me to keep him? Would it be better to find him a new loving owner who would see to this need better? I know he would initially not like this solution, but would get used to it with time.
—Unsure (S.Africa)
DEAR U.:
Your dog is very lucky to have someone who puts his needs ahead of your own desires. Is there any way you could hire someone to walk him or do some kind of barter or trade with someone for walking services? If so, that would probably do both of you of you a world of good. If not, is there a neighbor or a friend who would walk him, at least occasionally? If enough people could walk him once or twice a week, you might be able to have his walking needs covered. You could maybe also post some flyers requesting volunteers at your local humane society if you cannot afford to hire someone.
You might also want to do some Internet research for your area—sometimes there are organizations or individuals who would love to go walking with a dog that aren’t able to commit full-time to a dog. Perhaps you could work something out with them.
I would first consider every other alternative because being with you is probably your dog’s top priority.
Best of luck, my friend.

DEAR DALI MAMA:
I love my wife and love our dogs of which there are many but they are crowding us out of our bed and always sleep in between us, which I am not crazy about. How do I reclaim our bed without upsetting my wife?
—Sleeping with the Dogs (United States)
DEAR S.W.T.D.:
I understand your situation all too well. Haha.
Have you considered putting dog beds on the floor of your bedroom? I have even seen some people make doggie bunk beds for the doggie family members, depending on how many dogs they have.
Let your wife know you want to be snuggling with her at night, not the dogs, even though you love them too! You might have to train the dogs at first to go to their beds since they are used to sleeping with the two of you, but if you are firm and consistent, they should eventually happily adopt to their new sleeping arrangements over time if they are still in the same room with you.

DEAR DALI MAMA:
Whenever I go to the zoo, I get really depressed. I can be having a great day and happy as a clam, and then get to the zoo, and feel awful. Why is that?
—Not Having Fun at the Zoo (United States)
DEAR N.H.F.A.T.Z.:
You’re probably very sensitive to energy. Before I learned how to protect my energy, I too would get extremely depressed at the zoo because I would pick up on the energy of the animals, many of whom were bored and depressed.
Try imagining energy roses on all sides of you and allow the roses to absorb external energy rather than having your body absorb it. When the roses get full of depressed or other energies, explode them and create fresh new roses around you. Repeat as needed.
Also, consider visiting and supporting places that treat animals well and that give them plenty of space, preferably in their natural habitat. One animal sanctuary I love if you are ever in the San Francisco Bay Area, is PreetiRang (http://www.preetirangsanctuary.org).

DEAR DALI MAMA:
I have been depressed ever since our new “president” has been elected. I can’t even say or write his name and every time I see his ugly face on tv or hear his arrogant voice on the radio, I feel sick to my stomach. And now with the hurricanes and floods, sometimes I feel overwhelmed and paralyzed. What can I do?
—Depressed (United States)
DEAR D.:
You ask an excellent question: What can you do? No matter what one’s political views are, transmute your resistance and depression to action that makes this world a better place. For example, temporary foster homes in every state are needed for animals displaced by the floods and the Red Cross is looking for donations for the people there, including necessities such as diapers and tampons.
Explore how you can start by taking small steps to help. As a country, energetically, most Americans have great generosity and heart. I suspect you do as well. Show yourself and this country what truly makes America great.
Many who were similarly disgusted by the current president have mobilized, turning their outrage into positive action. For example, the president’s “pussy” comment sparked a sudden surge of many women and men stepping up to political leadership on both local and national levels.
On an energetic level, the election of the current president is a call to wake up on both a national and international level. What are the ways you were asleep and what are you going to do now?
I am looking forward to seeing what you are capable of, my friend.
